Director Deborah Chow shared with Entertainment Weekly. “Because in large part, that’s where our characters come from and that’s where their stories began. So the prequels are kind of more connected to our series.”
Of course, there were already a few confirmed vignettes in the new series, however Zhao emphasized how this story focuses more on this character’s journey rather than being an opportunity for crossovers.
“Obviously I came from The Mandalorian, so a lot of that DNA is inside of me,” she says. And a lot of my Jedi teachers, along with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, are also so integral to me now, but I wasn’t looking to necessarily relate anything. She was just trying to tell the story with integrity to the character, and so that was the connection to the competitions.”
The project’s origins were a movie, which further explains how to treat it as an isolated story, with writer Joby Harold detailing how the concept embraced a self-contained feel.
“From the beginning, we all thought this was his unique story,” Harold said. “I always thought it was its own chapter in the larger canon between the prequels and the original trilogy. There was a story that wasn’t told, which to me was kind of like Episode 3 and a half. And so within that void, I was personally thinking of it as its own ending story, with Knowing it’s already tied to the past and tied to what’s to come. But where possible, I’ve thought of it this way, as opposed to being within the larger tapestry of some of the other shows to come out. So it’s its own story.”
Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi Premieres on Disney+ on May 27.
